This perennial fern produces basal leaves that are quadrifoliate (divided into 4 leaflets). These leaves are located at the apices of slender petioles about 3-10" long. This fern is mostly aquatic; its leaflets are slightly submerged, floating, or emergent. Less often, this fern is terrestrial on wet ground.

Nutritions

Although no toccicity report for this species is found, many ferns also contain thiaminase, and an enzyme that robs the body of its vitamin B complex. In small quantities this enzyme will do no harm to people eating and adequate diet that is rich in vitamin B. The enzyme is destroyed by heat, so cooking the plant will remove the thiaminase.

Uses

A juice made from the leaves diuretic and febrifuge. It is also used to treat snake bite and applied to abscesses.
